Artist Statement

Ms. Ives is an accomplished traditionally trained artist. Her husband, Ryan, diagnosed at age 32, has tonic-clonic epilepsy, and she has been his primary caregiver since 2010.

Her artistic journey has been enriched by her experiences living in Thailand, Singapore, England, and the US, with each location leaving its mark on her work. Kate’s versatility shines through in her use of mediums such as watercolor, gouache, digital, acrylic, and oil.

Driven by a desire to spread joy and positivity, she employs bright colors and whimsical subjects to make people smile, adding a touch of lightheartedness to their day.

By choosing her medium based on her mood and the narrative she wants to explore, Ms. Ives ensures each piece offers a unique, uplifting experience. Her art invites viewers to embrace the playful, cheerful side of life, painting portraits, buildings, pets, and objects from unusual perspectives.

Last year, she and Ryan began a project to show her artwork online, at local art markets, and in installations at hotels, restaurants, salons, etc. Last summer, Kate’s art was on display for three months at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where Ryan sees an epileptologist. Artwork is a cooperative way for them to participate in a shared activity and, through some of the specific epilepsy themed paintings, provide others with positive messaging.

Together they volunteer with the Epilepsy Foundation of New England (EFNE). They support annual walks in Burlington, VT, and Boston, MA, where they bring prints of Kate’s epilepsy-themed paintings to share with participants. Ryan also volunteers with the Epilepsy Envoys Program for Vermont. Through this program, EFNE and its Envoys work with state legislators to pass laws such as the Seizure Safe Schools initiative.
