Artist Statement

Statement by Sylvie’s mother, Julie Langer

Sylvie is a 25-year old young adult with an exceptional spirit. Her epilepsy is a symptom of a rare condition that also includes difficulties with learning and communication. Despite these challenges, Sylvie continues to grow and surprise in remarkable ways!

Sylvie began to draw during the Covid quarantine. She worked with online instructors in all kinds of subjects, but it was drawing that ultimately inspired her “creative edge.”

Through her dedicated teachers, she learned about materials, absorbed techniques and began to develop a distinctive way of looking and creating.

Sylvie chooses her subject matter carefully — there are animals (especially cats and birds), plants, cityscapes and characters from the world of animation. Whether it is an image from a book, online, or drawn directly from life, Sylvie “activates” what she sees to convey personality, sensation and atmosphere.

Her compositions often start small. Once a drawing is complete, she is able to scan and enhance her artwork at high resolution to create vivid and lasting images. The result is playful, enchanting and alive.

Sylvie’s challenges became the foundation for her unique practice. She has emerged as a true artist with a keen, confident perspective and a great visual sense.

This is Sylvie’s third exhibition with the Hidden Truths Project.
