Artist Statement

When I was eight years old, I was diagnosed with Generalized Absence Epilepsy. Five years later, I began to have Grand Mal seizures as well. Throughout the past eight years of dealing with epilepsy, I have found that art is one of the most helpful things to help my brain and nervous system stay in a calm and healthy place. Creating art has repeatedly benefited my nervous system, and I truly love everything about it.

My current favorite mediums are acrylic or oil and ceramic, although I love trying new things and experimenting with different materials. I have been painting for as long as I can remember, and I have done pottery/ceramics for about three years. My art is inspired by many things, such as nature, mental and physical health, other works of art, and different uses of color and texture.

I am now 16 years old and will be a junior at Western High School in Parma, Michigan, this fall. This coming year, I will serve as vice president of our school’s National Art Honor Society program, and I plan to take a semester-long independent study in ceramics. I will also take a K-12 education class where I will learn more about the field and work directly with an art teacher to explore my goal of becoming a K-12 art educator.
