Artist Statement

Art is how I explore who I am. As an immigrant child, art had been the only constant in my life. Drawing was how I kept memories of my birth home alive in my day to day and how I tried to understand my new, unfamiliar surroundings. After being diagnosed with epilepsy in 2012, painting, once again, became a tool for me to understand my new world and try to hold on to my old, familiar world.

I choose watercolor as my medium. The fluidity of the media allows the images to take on a more organic, free-form life of their own. I like the translucent and opaque qualities that watercolors can simultaneously have: layering images, words, and colors to express the complexity of feelings, beings, and places.
