Artist Statement
Laura Mellow faced the challenges of epilepsy earlier in life and now uses her art to help educate others and bring greater understanding to the condition. She is proud to be part of the Hidden Truths Project and 1:26 The Art of Epilepsy, which seeks to illuminate both the challenges and hopes of people living with epilepsy.
Ms. Mellow’s love of art began early and led her from Punahou in Hawaii to Washington University in St. Louis, studies in Venice and Florence, and the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. Classically trained, she works in both figurative and abstract styles, incorporating traditional and digital media to create her distinctive work.
Her art has been exhibited in Hawaii, Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and Italy. She was included in Luciano Benetton’s Imago Mundi: Aloha Spirit—Contemporary Artists from Hawaii collection and has been featured in Free Surf Magazine, where her surf art and personal experiences with epilepsy were highlighted, as well as in the Artist of Hawaii 2024 Biennial.
It is truly a privilege to share my work through 1:26 The Art of Epilepsy and to be part of a community that uses art to expand understanding, challenge perceptions, and give voice to the experiences of those affected by epilepsy.
