Statement by Shafiq’s parents
We have witnessed how art became Shafiq’s voice long before he could communicate through conventional means. Living with autism, profound deafness, partial blindness, and epilepsy, Shafiq experiences the world in his own unique way. While spoken words are beyond his reach, abstract painting allows him to express his emotions, memories, and inner world with freedom and authenticity.
Every painting marks a chapter in Shafiq’s artistic journey. Rather than beginning with sketches or carefully planned compositions, he creates entirely through instinct, emotion, and visual memory. Guided by his mood, he responds naturally to colors, textures, and movement, allowing each artwork to unfold at its own pace. Some paintings are completed within days, while others take weeks or months, making each piece a genuine, unrepeatable reflection of a moment in his life.
Painting is far more than a creative activity for Shafiq. Despite the challenges of hyperactivity and epilepsy, the process of painting brings him a rare sense of focus and calm. Through layers of color and expressive textures, he transforms feelings that cannot be spoken into visual narratives that invite others to experience the world through his perspective.
Our greatest hope is that people will first recognize Shafiq as a naturally talented artist, appreciating the originality, emotion, and sincerity of his work before seeing his disabilities. His paintings are not defined by limitation, but by resilience, creativity, and the belief that art is a universal language that connects people beyond words.
