Artist Statement
Zach Beckemeyer is an artist living in Costa Mesa, CA. After multiple brain surgeries to control seizures due to epilepsy, he found his purpose in life through art. His work is featured around the community, in local galleries, and in art shows. Illustrating is another source of medicine that keeps his mind and body at ease. He’s especially passionate about giving back to those who have supported him over the years including his doctors, family, and friends.
Since Zach’s diagnosis in 2011, he and his doctors have struggled to control his seizures. This has led to his inability to work, go to college, drive, play music, and so many more aspects of being a young adult. Depression sets in, which adds more complexities to his health.
Creating art makes Zach feel productive, helps his mental health, and literally exercises his brain through focused concentration. When he finishes a piece, it’s like building a new home for him. That home is built with pride, self-worth, and overall happiness.
He’s excited to have others experience his art through organizations like the Hidden Truths Project, The Epilepsy Foundation, and more. He feels less like a grain of sand lost on the beach and more like a large stone leading the way in his own life.
Technique: An Illustration starts with a #2 pencil and a sketchpad, then continues to evolve with a black, fine-point Sharpie marker. Next, the piece is taken into Adobe Illustrator to create colorful multimedia artwork
