Chicago Artist Talk 2026

2026 1:26 The Art of Epilepsy – Chicago Artist Talks

Illuminating the Human Experience of Epilepsy Through Art, Storytelling, and Community.

Artists Talk: Friday, October 16, 5:30–7:30 pm | Jackson Junge Gallery | 1389 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago

This event is free to attend, but please register

Join us for an intimate and interactive evening of storytelling, conversation, and connection.

The 1:26 The Art of Epilepsy Artist Talks are not traditional presentations. They are conversations—an opportunity for artists to share the stories behind their artwork and for attendees to engage directly with the people who created it.

Each artist brings their own perspective, experiences, and creative process to the conversation. As they share their stories, guests are invited to ask questions, respond to what they have heard, and, if they wish, share their own experiences and reflections.

In previous years, one of the most meaningful parts of the Artist Talks has been the opportunity to simply talk with the artists. These conversations create connections that extend beyond the artwork itself, opening the door to greater understanding of what it means to live with epilepsy. And for people living with the experience of epilepsy—to know that are not alone.

Through stories and shared experiences, artists and attendees explore the many realities of epilepsy—the challenges, uncertainty, stigma, resilience, relationships, identity, and moments of hope that are often difficult to see or explain.

This year’s gathering brings to life the theme, “Illuminating the Human Experience of Epilepsy Through Art, Storytelling, and Community.” Together, we create a space where stories can be heard, questions can be asked, and experiences can be shared.

Come hear the stories behind the art. Ask questions. Share your own story. Connect with artists and others who understand.

This event is free, but registration is required. Register today and be part of the conversation.

Musical Medicine: Where Science Meets the Soul

Join us for Musical Medicine — an intimate, immersive look at how music shapes our bodies, shifts our emotions, and helps us make meaning of what we live through.
Music can do astonishing things:
  • Quiet or awaken the nervous system.
  • Unlock emotions too layered for words.
  • Offer comfort in moments of isolation or illness.
  • And, for some people with epilepsy, stir memories and sensations powerful enough to provoke musicogenic seizures — revealing just how deeply sound, feeling, and brain activity intertwine.

Musician and advocate Guy W. Stoker will take us inside Purple Universe — his newly released, genre-spanning album rooted in his personal journey with epilepsy. Through story and song, he invites us into experiences rarely shared: the fog of medication, the unpredictability of seizures, the loneliness that can follow — and the fierce creativity that refuses to be silenced.
In one of the album’s most striking turns, we even hear from epilepsy itself — voiced not as a condition, but as a presence that shapes, challenges, and transforms a life.

GUY W. STOKER

About Guy W. Stoker

Guy W. Stoker is a British pianist, composer, and singer-songwriter from Northumberland, now based in Paris. Living with epilepsy since early childhood, Guy has transformed personal experience into art that bridges music, science, and advocacy.

With a Master’s in Contemporary Composition from UCF, he combines musical performance with neurological research to illuminate how sound and emotion intersect with the brain’s complex workings. Through Purple Universe and his public engagements, Guy invites audiences to listen — not only to music, but to the stories it tells about the human experience of neurological diversity.

If Not Us, Then Who? is more than a well-being forum — it’s a gathering for truth-telling. A place where the realities of epilepsy, so often hidden or misunderstood, can finally be spoken out loud. Hosted by the Hidden Truths Project, this online event invites us to step into the human side of the condition: the fear, the creativity, the resilience, the daily unknowns — and the art that emerges from them.

Orange County Arts and Disability

Saturday, April 26 | Doors open at 11:00 AM PT. | 2800 N Main St, Santa Ana, California

VSA Orange County is now Orange County Arts and Disability (OCAD). This new name proudly claims the word “disability” and clearly identifies who we serve: the arts and disability community. Our new name also allows us to continue working to normalize and celebrate disability as part of our greater Orange County arts community.

OCAD provides arts, education, and cultural opportunities by, with, and for people with disabilities, making the arts accessible to people of all abilities.

Our logo was designed to encompass who we are as an organization. The two figures express joy, community, and inclusivity while celebrating the visual and performing arts. Purple was chosen because of its ties to creativity and reliability. The orange represents our connection to the broader Orange County arts community.

As an international, nonprofit organization founded in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, we are creating a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.  Orange County became the first site in the State of California in 1976.

Saturday, April 26th at MainPlace Mall in Santa Ana to culminate year-round, school and community-based arts program efforts, including hands-on workshops, a resource fair of community organizations that provide services to the disability community, performances, and a visual art exhibit, serving all ages and all disabilities. The opening ceremonies showcase outstanding performers and provide an overview of the day’s activities.
